003 002 PREFACE The world of commerce is like a battlefield. The Federation of Hong Kong Industries (FHKI) has been fighting across the horizon throughout the years to find various business disciplines. The disciplines are the camps where representatives from different businesses express themselves. Over half a century ago, FHKI took a visionary stand to highlight the importance of design to the industrial and business communities. The establishment of Design Council of Hong Kong (DCHK) was one of its many strategic moves to support its efforts. I Ching states that “change makes path and path leads to longevity.” FHKI has witnessed how Hong Kong’s economic and trade development transformed from “original equipment manufacturers” (OEM) into “original design manufacturers” (ODM), and some even became “original brand management” (OBM). Design is proven to play a tactically pivotal role. Development of businesses relies on the unity of enterprises and companies and each position to fight to their strengths with flexibility of resources. Combining appropriate adjustments of formations, opening up unknown fields would be the long-term strategy. We shall uphold the mandate set up in 1960 to promote trade, investment, technological advancement, manpower development, and create more business development opportunities. Moreover, we will conquer further by promoting “re-industrialisation”, which requires solid collaboration among the industrial and business communities, creative industries and higher education, to create added values for research results to be applied in the future development of industrial and business sectors. չ DesignXcel պ exactly embodies such formation of the “Iron Triangle”, reaffirming the importance of an intensified collaboration between businessmen, young designers and design education to encourage a proactive practice of “corporate social responsibility” and to experience cross-generational benefits. Eventually, the overall innovation index will be enhanced to benefit the general economic development of Hong Kong.
